Fr. Novak was born in Chicago, Il., at the age of 12 the Novak family moved to Oklahoma.

Fr. Novak attended Mount St. Mary's High School in Oklahoma City where he graduated in 1979. He attended St. Meinrad Seminary College and St. Meinrad School of Theology in Indiana.

Before coming to St. John's, Fr. Novak was the  Associate pastor of St. Charles Borromeo in Oklahoma City and the chaplain at Mt. St. Mary's High School for one year and Bishop McGuinness High School for 2 years.
